Defining Your Core Values and Why it Matters

Imagine an employee at a children’s hospital. What would you assume about that person? What kind of values would someone possess in order to work in that career field? Is it possible that this employee made the choice driven by their personal core values and wasn’t even aware?

What Are Core Values?

Core values are fundamental beliefs held by a person or company and serve as a compass to fulfill a purpose. These beliefs direct behavior, decision making and goal setting. Knowing your core values is important because it gives you an understanding of not only who we are but who we want to work for and towards. They shape our vision as an individual and a community.

Why Do Core Values Matter?

There are a number of things that make an organization thrive with success. High among that list are its core values. Determining these core values can set the tone for the company culture and help in the decision making process. They help leadership select the right team and also determine the kind of clientele you’d like to work with. Do you share similar values? Do you have the same driving principles? These are important questions to ask before opening any relationship which includes potential clients.

On the flip side, at an individual level or job seeker level, getting to know your core values will help determine the kind of company, environment and team you want to pursue. What kind of people do you want to surround yourself with? What goals do you share with the company you are interviewing for? How does the company’s vision complement your values and do your values contribute to their vision? If you are a candidate for a new job, your core values will set you apart from the other applicants in an honest and sincere way with no resume padding required.
